Pigeons and infection<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the arguments for wanting to fight pigeons is: they are carriers and can transmit infection to humans.<\/p>

If you want to use that argument, then you have to change the word "pigeons" to "all birds", as we are surrounded by millions of birds in the public space, all of which should be potential carriers, and we should therefore be constantly exposed to risk of infection. However, the likelihood of infection is, according to a number of studies, very, very low. If the claim was true, then we should not only concentrate on fighting pigeons, but extend the fight to all birds. It is completely unnecessary. Exotic birds, which people keep in their private homes, and birds bred in industrial agriculture, on the other hand, may carry some risk of transmitting certain diseases to humans.<\/p>

The following quotes support does not<\/strong> the allegation of pigeons and infection:<\/h5>

Mike Everett, spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds<\/strong>\u00a0i England\u00a0udtalte i \u2019The Big Issue Magazine\u2019, februar 2001: “Hele den her ‘rotter med vinger’ ting er\u00a0en gang f\u00f8lelsesladet nonsens. Der er none<\/strong> evidence that they (pigeons) spread disease. \u201d<\/p>

As the head of the veterinary services<\/strong> Speaking to the House of Commons in London in 2000 about reducing the number of pigeons in Trafalgar Square, he was asked if the large number of pigeons in the square posed a health risk to humans. The head of the veterinary services replied to Parliament that they did in his opinion does not<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/p>

Charlotte Donnelly,\u00a0amerikansk ekspert n\u00e5r det g\u00e6lder bek\u00e6mpelse af fugle,<\/strong> skrev i en rapport bestilt af Cincinnatis milj\u00f8beskyttelsesr\u00e5d: “Sandheden er, at langt de fleste mennesker er i ringe eller ingen sundhedsm\u00e6ssig risiko fra duer og de\u00a0har sandsynligvis\u00a0en st\u00f8rre risiko for at blive ramt af et\u00a0lyn end at p\u00e5drage sig en alvorlig sygdom fra duer.”<\/p>

Guy Merchant, Director of a consulting firm regarding. birds<\/strong>\u00a0siger, n\u00e5r talen falder p\u00e5 overf\u00f8relse af sygdomme fra duer til mennesker: “Hvis vi troede alt, hvad vi l\u00e6ser i medierne om\u00a0sundhedsm\u00e6ssige risici forbundet med duer, og den farceagtige propaganda distribueret af skadedyrsbek\u00e6mpelsesindustrien, ville vi aldrig forlade vores hjem. Kendsgerningen er, at der sandsynligvis er en st\u00f8rre risiko for menneskers sundhed ved at spise intensivt opdr\u00e6ttede kyllinger og \u00e6g fra supermarkeder, eller have kontakt med k\u00e6ledyr s\u00e5som katte, hunde og eksotiske fugle i bur, end der er fra kontakt med duer.”<\/p>

Dr. David A Palmer (BVSc., MRCVS)<\/strong> stated in an article entitled 'Pigeon Lung Disease Fatality and Health Risk from Ferals': \u201cIt is clear that if one has a compromised immune system, e.g. in the form of a specific allergy or a lung disease that causes breathing difficulties, then one will react to anything that may be irritating to the bronchi and lungs. But it is really absolute nonsense for a popular daily newspaper to claim that pigeons pose a health hazard and probably need to be removed for the nation's health. \u201d<\/span><\/p>

Dr. David Taylor (BVMS FRCVS FZS) <\/strong>states: \u201cIn mine 50<\/span> years of professional<\/span> occupation<\/span> as a veterinarian<\/span> able to<\/span> I<\/span> dont remember<\/span> one case of<\/span> one<\/span> human zoonosis (sygdom der kan\u00a0smitte fra dyr til mennesker<\/em>)<\/span>\u00a0related to<\/span> you are<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0 On the other hand<\/span> know I<\/span>, and have seen many<\/span>\u00a0examples of,<\/span> human disease<\/span> related<\/span> to Contact<\/span> with<\/span> dogs, cats,<\/span> cattle<\/span>, monkeys, sheep, camels,<\/span> budgies<\/span>, parrots, cockroaches<\/span>, aquarium fish<\/span> and even<\/span> dolphins<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>

The three centers The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, the New York City Department of Health,\u00a0<\/strong>and the Arizona Department of Health<\/strong>\u00a0everyone agrees that diseases associated with pigeons represent little or no risk to humans. \u201cWe never have<\/span> documented<\/span> an infection from pigeon<\/span> to man<\/span> in the state<\/span> Arizona.<\/span>Says Mira J. Leslie, State of Arizona dyrl\u00e6ge med speciale\u00a0i <\/span>public health<\/span>.<\/p>

Steve Harris, BBC Wildlife<\/strong>: \u201cWhy do pigeons get such a bad publicity? Why are pigeons considered to be full of diseases that will kill you if you so much as come near one? Unfortunately, the answer is: greed<\/strong>! Skadedyrbek\u00e6mpelsesfirmaer anskuer duer som en uendelig kilde til indt\u00e6gt (fordi bek\u00e6mpelsesmetoderne er uhyre ineffektive i det lange l\u00f8b) og de spreder misinformation og overdriver alt \u2013 og derved g\u00f8r de folk angste for og uempatiske i forhold til duer. P\u00e5 de fleste kommunale hjemmesider er der en side om duer og sygdom, og de angiver altid, at duer udg\u00f8r en sundhedsrisiko.\u00a0Man ser imidlertid aldrig n\u00e6vnt nogen ny videnskabelig forskning, der seri\u00f8st underbygger deres p\u00e5stande (det samme g\u00e6lder skadedyrbek\u00e6mpernes hjemmesider)\u201d.<\/p>

An organization working to preserve pigeons at Trafalgar Sqare<\/strong> wrote: "If there<\/span> was<\/span> anyone<\/span> real risk that<\/span> you are<\/span> transmits diseases to<\/span> people,<\/span> ville<\/span> we<\/span> see<\/span> epidemics<\/span> among<\/span> dove<\/span>breeders<\/span> who do competitions with<\/span> pigeons and<\/span> spend a lot of their<\/span> time<\/span> in dusty<\/span> dove<\/span>room<\/span>. We<\/span> would also<\/span> see<\/span> everyone involved<\/span>\u00a0in rehabilitation of<\/span> duer\u00a0p\u00e5 <\/span>hospitals for\u00a0wild animals<\/span> verden over, falde om\u00a0p\u00e5 stribe<\/span>. The facts<\/span> speaks for itself<\/span>. You are<\/span> does not spread<\/span> diseases, and<\/span> hvis\u00a0man fremf\u00f8rer, at vi\u00a0m\u00e5\u00a0<\/span>get rid of<\/span> with the pigeons because\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span> is<\/span> ‘potential spreaders',<\/span> so have\u00a0<\/span>we<\/span> need to<\/span> get rid of everyone<\/span> wild<\/span> birds.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>

The Association of Pigeon Veterinarians<\/strong> (association of veterinarians working with carrier pigeons) issued a statement in response to a question about the possible impact of pigeons on human health. The opinion concludes: \u201c\u2026 opdr\u00e6t<\/span>, storage,<\/span> and training of<\/span> you are <\/span>constitute<\/span> after\u00a0our knowledge <\/span>not larger\u00a0<\/span>health hazard<\/span> than<\/span> hold off<\/span> others<\/span> pets<\/span> or<\/span> Pet.<\/span>“<\/p>

A biologist from a Belgian animal welfare association who has prepared a report on pigeons in urban space stated: <\/strong>There is absolutely no danger to public health. Pigeons cannot transmit either paratyphoid or tuberculosis to humans. Avian tuberculosis does not pose a danger to humans either.<\/p>

Scientific research in Germany and the Netherlands, by Dr. GM Dorrestein, <\/strong>professor i patologi ved University of Utrecht, har vist, at brevduer, som er vendt tilbage til naturen, ikke frembyder nogen risiko for folkesundheden. Bird flu and pigeons
<\/strong>Some foreign and domestic newspapers wrote years ago that bird flu could be transmitted via pigeons. It conducted a series of experiments whose results showed that pigeons are resistant or minimally susceptible to infection with HPAIV and NPAIV, and play no or minimal epidemiological role in the spread of virus.
